Port of Guangzhou is one of the main coastal ports in China and the significant hinge of the country's integrated transportation system. It possesses 6 port operation areas including Inner Port Area, Huangpu Port Area, Xinsha Port Area, Nansha Port Area and anchorage ground of Zhujiangkou (estuary of the Pearl River) water area.
The Inner Port Area is for transportation of energy sources, raw materials, food supplies, chandlery and the cargo-handling of containers, as well as passenger transportation in the Pearl River Delta area. The Huangpu Port Area is for transportation of containers, food supplies, coal, fertilizer and finished oil in the coastal area. Xinsha Port Area is for containers, coal, ore, food supplies and fertilizer. The Nansha Port Area is for Vehicle Ro-ro Ships, chandlery, energy sources, liquid chemical materials and containers; also bonded area, logistics industry, trade business and bulk cargo transportation will be developed in the Nansha Port.
Container volume of the Port of Guangzhou grows rapidly as the economy in the hinterland of the Pearl River area booms. Container volume reached 100 million tons in the year 1999 and became the second port in mainland China that was listed in the world largest ports. Till 2007, the port handled 370 million tons of cargo with over 9,990 thousand containers, ranking 3rd in China and 5th of the world's top 10.

Guangzhou Shipbuilding Industry
Located in southern China's Guangdong province, Guangzhou is at the junction of three rivers (East River, West River and North River) and facing the South Sea. It is one of the main shipbuilding bases in the country.
Guangzhou branch of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) made 66 ships/941.4 thousand gross tons in 2007, with a value of industrial output of 13 billion yuan. Guanghzou Shipbuilding received shipbuilding orders of 5,883.2 thousand tons in the same year, with contracts involving 39.5 billion yuan. New orders in 2007 reached 219 ships/ 9,646,600 gross tons with contracts involving 65.5 billion yuan.
CSSC Guangzhou Longxue Shipbuilding Corporation Ltd. is a large modern ship arrangement enterprise. The company can make ships with a total deadweight tonnage of 3 million. It signed shipbuilding contracts for 16 ships/3992 thousand gross tons during 2006 and 2007. The company is now fully engaged until 2011.
Guangzhou Shipyard International Corporation Ltd. had new orders of over 60 ships/3 million tons in 2007. It is also fully engaged until 2012. The company works at research and invention of handy liquid cargo vessels and has already independently developed several types of liquid cargo vessels like the 38500t product tanker and 51800t product tanker. The 50500 DWT Product/Chemical Tanker and 39000 DWT Ⅱ type chemicals ship introduced by the company are still new in the country and meet international standards.
Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard Corporation Ltd. is a main base in China producing branch-line container ships and large and medium-sized dredgers. It has finished the design and improvement of a 1400TEU container ship and the optimization of the ship's form. The company is also proud of its Wenchong 1700TEU container ship which they invented. Wenchong Shipyard have also successfully built Grab Dredgers, (split type) Trailing Suction Dredgers, Cutter Suction Dredgers and (self-propelled) Trailing Suction Dredgers which can have equivalent functions to some imported dredgers.
CSSC Guangzhou Huangpu Shipbuilding Corporation Ltd. is a significant production base for the military in south China. It has already invented an ocean salvage vessel, small water plane area twin-hull oilfield ship, electrical drive oilfield stand-by ship and a coast guard patrol vessel. The small water plane area twin-hull oilfield ship invented by the company was listed as one of the fifteen big equipment research projects in China. The 8000 kW ocean salvage vessel is now the most professional salvage vessel in the country with the largest dimensions, most advanced equipment and best salvage functions. A salvage helicopter can hover over the vessel.

Guangzhou Honda Automobile Corporation Ltd.
Guangzhou Honda Automobile Co., Ltd (Guangzhou Honda) was established on July 1st, 1998, by Guangzhou Automobile Group and Honda Motor Co., Ltd. from Japan with 50:50 investment proportions for a period of 30 years. The company currently has two plants in Guangzhou's Huangpu district and Zengcheng city, covering a land area of approximately 1.6 million square meters, and employees around 6,600. With an annual production capacity of 360,000 cars, the company now owns 4 famous brands of cars in 19 types of models including Accord, Odyssey, Fit and City.
Guangzhou Honda established her Guangzhou Honda Research & Development Co., Ltd (GHRD) in July 2007. It is the first R&D subsidiary of this kind in China that wholly-owned by a joint venture. GHRD is responsible for developing an independent product line covering design of vehicle concept and automobile moulding, full-scale test, live test and spare parts exploitation.
Since the establishment in 1998, Guangzhou Honda has made one and another aggressive achievement annually in production and sale. On June 28th 2006, Guangzhou Honda's medium and high class vehicle sales reached a cumulative number of 500 thousand, ranking first in China's automobile industry. On February 10th 2007, the 1,000,000th car of the company went off production line.

Guangzhou Science Town
Guangzhou Science Town broke ground on December 28th 1998 is a science and technology industrial park for upgrading the creation ability and accelerating the development of hi-tech industry. It is also the future core of Guangzhou's hi-tech industry development district. With an area of 20.24 square kilometers, the Science Town is to draw an investment of 16 billion yuan. Part of the town has already been put into construction. Five functional districts are set in the Science Town including electronic information industry district, bio-medicine industry district, new material and new energy industry district, colligate incubator of research and development service district, and ecological preservation zone.
Guangzhou Science Town has invited international bidding for its planning and designing with all the facilities meet a high standard. Also the City has been granted ISO14000 national level demonstration zone.
Admission qualification for enterprises of the Science Town is comparatively high. The total investment of each project should not be less than 5 million USD. All the projects should be hi-tech ones with high content of science and technology, good economic returns and meet the requirements of environmental protection.
As of end of 2006, nearly 600 enterprises in the Science Town are under incubation. 210 different research and developing organizations have settled in with 4 of national standard. The city has already attracted 188 foreign invested projects with 1,394 million USD and 629 domestic projects with registered capital of 6,882 million yuan.

Guangzhou Development District
Situated in the east end, Guangzhou Development District (GDD) is an ecological and modern new zone. It is the powerhouse of Guangzhou's eastbound development campaign.
The planning area of GDD covers 78.92 square kilometers, including Guangzhou Economic and Technological Development District, Guangzhou New and Hi-tech Industrial Development District, Guangzhou Free Trade Zone, Guangzhou Export Processing Zone and Guangzhou Free Trade and Logistics Zone these state-level economic functional sectors.

The Development of Foreign-funded Enterprises and World-renowned Companies
Guangzhou is one of the cities which have opened to the outside world. Up to 2007, 160 of the world's top 500 transnational corporations had invested in Guangzhou including 348 foreign direct investment projects. The total investment was 13.548 billion USD, while contractual foreign capital was 5.169 billion USD and the actual use of foreign capital 4.439 billion USD. More than 60 foreign companies in Guangzhou function as their (regional) business headquarters. Microsoft (China) Industrial Base, IBM Software Innovation Centre, Intel Guangzhou International Safe Data Solution Center, British Tesco South China Headquarters and other international advanced modern service industry projects have settled in Guangzhou.
Guangzhou is the standing investment hotspot in Asia-Pacific region. Among Guangzhou's actual use of foreign capital, the top countries (regions) are British Virgin Islands, Hong Kong, Britain and Cayman Isles. The investment of enterprises from these countries (regions) occupies 90% of Guangzhou's actual use of foreign capital.
In 2007, the number of new foreign-funded enterprises in Guangzhou was 959; Guangzhou absorbed contractual foreign capital of 7.035 billion USD and the actual use of foreign capital in Guangzhou Municipality amounted to 3.286 billion USD. In that year, among those projects confirmed by Guangzhou Municipality, 246 of them had a total investment of 10 million USD, with contractual foreign capital of 6.132 billion USD. These projects occupied nearly 90% of contractual foreign capital citywide.
The settlement of a group of dominating projects, such as Hino Motors with a total investment of 3 billion Yuan, JEF Cold-rolled Steel project with a total investment of 6 billion Yuan, and the 3M South China Production Base, promoted industry competitiveness in Guangzhou further. The overseas capital doubled in the service sector. The contracted foreign investment that has just been approved by local municipality amounts to 3.95 billion USD, which optimized the open economy structure of Guangzhou. The overseas-invested enterprises are witnessing a substantial increase of investment and shares. A total of 675 fund-replenishment projects were approved, with average investment reinforcement up from 2.6782 million USD last year to 6.5111 million USD. It shows that overseas investors have increasing confidence in Guangzhou, and pushes the development of clusters of strong industries of the city.
