Port of Guangzhou is one of the main coastal ports in China and the significant hinge of the country's integrated transportation system. It possesses 6 port operation areas including Inner Port Area, Huangpu Port Area, Xinsha Port Area, Nansha Port Area and anchorage ground of Zhujiangkou (estuary of the Pearl River) water area.

The Inner Port Area is for transportation of energy sources, raw materials, food supplies, chandlery and the cargo-handling of containers, as well as passenger transportation in the Pearl River Delta area. The Huangpu Port Area is for transportation of containers, food supplies, coal, fertilizer and finished oil in the coastal area. Xinsha Port Area is for containers, coal, ore, food supplies and fertilizer. The Nansha Port Area is for Vehicle Ro-ro Ships, chandlery, energy sources, liquid chemical materials and containers; also bonded area, logistics industry, trade business and bulk cargo transportation will be developed in the Nansha Port.

Container volume of the Port of Guangzhou grows rapidly as the economy in the hinterland of the Pearl River area booms. Container volume reached 100 million tons in the year 1999 and became the second port in mainland China that was listed in the world largest ports. Till 2007, the port handled 370 million tons of cargo with over 9,990 thousand containers, ranking 3rd in China and 5th of the world's top 10.
