New Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport

The new Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is a millennium construction project in China and plays an important role in the civil airport network. The state and local government pays great attention to the project and the society shows very much concern on it as well. As one of the 3 big air hubs of the country, the new Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is the first one designed and built with the "hub" concept. With the unique construction, advanced facilities, elegant environment and safe and efficient ATC system, the airport will become one of the first class terminals in the world.

The new airport is located at the juncture of Renhe and Xinhua, north towns in the suburbs of Guangzhou, and is 17km away from the existing one and 28km away from down town. Besides, the local traffic network around the new airport is rather convenient: the Beijing-Guangzhou railway, the national roadways No.106 and No.107 are to the west and the No.105 is to the east. Also, the special highway to the new airport is functioning as a traffic artery in the north of Guangzhou, which connects Beijing-Zhuhai and Guangzhou-Shenzhen highways and provides quick access to the Pearl River Delta area for the passenger/cargo flow to the new airport. The planned airport light rail will link with 4 metro systems of the city, consisting the municipal fast rail network. Its north terminal will be set under the new airport passenger terminal building. With the airport light rail, even the passenger living far away in Panyu district, south suburbs of Guangzhou, can reach directly to the airport by metro.

Following the policy of "Unified Planning, One-time Land Purchasing, Phased Construction, Stepped Development", the new airport is constructed in two phases. The first phase is aimed to be finished in 2010, with a total investment of 19.6 billion RMBs. The land purchased is 21,840Mu, of which 21,510Mu is used for the airport, i.e. 4.6 times of the existing airport area.

The new airport has rational layout and clear functions. It consists of three parts: terminal area, flying area and working area. The terminal area is located in the center of the airfield and the flying area in the east and west. The working area, consisting of the office buildings of airport authorities, airlines and related organizations, air catering area, oil depot, environment protection facilities, cargo forwarding terminal and aircraft maintenance zone.

Through international bidding, the concept of Parsons Infrastructure & Technology Group Inc. of USA has been selected for the air terminal design. The terminal, with an area of approximately 300,000 m2, is designed to handle 25 million passengers and 1 million tons of cargo per year, 93 to 100 aircraft and 9300 passengers at peak hour.

During the initial phase, two runways are built simultaneously, of which the east one is 3,800m long and 60m wide and the west one 3,600m long and 45m wide. The third runway is planned in the long-term development, aimed to handle 80 million passengers and 2.5 million tons of cargo per year. The flying area is 4E grade and equipped with advanced radar monitoring system, automatic landing system and airfield lighting system, so that all types of aircraft in the world can land at full load. The apron will consist of four parts: one for passenger aircraft, one for cargo carriers, one for business aircraft and one for China Southern Airlines. In the initial phase there will be 66 berths for passenger aircraft, of which 46 are contact ones, 12 are remote ones, 2 for VIP flights and 6 for overnight parking. The cargo carrier part will provide 5 berths and China Southern Airlines will, in the long-term plan, set up 43 berths in their part, of which 3 are for cargo carriers.

The taxiway system is composed of the parallel taxiways, fast-exit taxiways, connecting taxiways and apron taxiways, of which the three connecting taxiways, two in the south and one in the north, are paths for aircraft mobilization between the east and west flying areas. The main access to the terminal complex just passes under the connecting taxiway, so passengers will feel exciting when they see aircraft moving overhead.

The new airport construction also include the China Southern Airlines base, ATC building and the oil depot, of which the China Southern Airlines base is designed for an annual turnover of 2.55 billion ton-km cargo and 13 million passengers. There will be 69 medium or large cargo carriers in the base and the maintenance yard can handle 257 aircraft per year. The ATC building will be integrated with navigational, communicational and meteorological facilities. Together with the advanced airport radar monitoring system, automatic landing system and the Central-Southern China Air Traffic Control Center, the 106m high ATC tower, the top one in China, provides efficient services to the clients. The oil depot is, for the time being, the biggest in China and it is the first time that the most superior oil supply system - SCADA is introduced so that direct filling can be made via the pipelines leading to the apron.

According to the "hub" concept, the new airport has introduced "human technology" to the functional design, in order to build a big and modern international airport with first class facilities, first class technology, first class management system and first class services.

The passenger terminal complex, including passenger terminal, ATC building, parking lot and airport hotel, will be the core area for passengers' stay in the airport. The passenger terminal consists of main building, connection buildings, corridors and bridges. The two arch shaped connection buildings, one in east and the other in west of the main building, surround the main building, bridges, airport hotel and parking lot and then, with the connecting roads, make them integrated. Two over bridges are to be built symmetrically at the north and south side of the main building, so the departure passengers can reach to ticketing hall on the 2nd floor of the main building more directly. As for the arrival passengers, they can leave quickly through the gates on the first floor of the connection buildings. A circular over bridge is to be built south of the parking lot, forming two circular road network north and south of the main building. In additional, those passengers getting off from metro can take lift from the –2 platform to the ticketing hall on the 2nd floor.

Corresponding to the smooth external traffic network, the inside of terminal is also well deigned and equipped to meet the needs of the passengers. "Two floor" concept has been adopted in the design: the ticketing hall is on the 2nd floor, with 168 check-in counters. Passenger can choose anyone of them for any flight, that changes the existing mode of check-in  – certain counter for certain flight. The security check point are to be set in the two connection buildings, after security check, passengers will standby at corresponding area of the 4 corridors and then board easily through one of the 46 gates. The boarding gates are scissors-shape laid, so the embarking and disembarking passengers do not interfere each other, for they use different paths. After the gate exit, along the corridor and the 2nd floor of the connection building, the disembarking passengers can get down to the 1st floor to claim their baggage there. For those aircraft parking at the remote berths, passengers will board through shuttle bus outside the waiting hall on the 1st floor of the corridors. To minimize walking, automatic walkways, escalators and elevators are installed many where in the terminal. The walking distance from the ticketing hall to the check-in counter is just 70m and by means of the aided facilities, passengers will walk no longer than 200m from check-in counter to anyone of the boarding gates. On the 2nd floor of the terminal, electric vehicles are provided for driving passengers to the specific transfer/transit points, avoiding long distance walking between the corridors. Also, there is no need for re-security-check and the ticketing counter is just within the isolated zone. In the terminal, security-check system, baggage handling system, departure controls system, flight information display system, visual docking and guidance system, public address system and public security system etc., are effectively integrated to maintain fast and reliable information exchange, providing multiple and excellent services to the airport authority, airlines and other organizations. In addition, restaurants, shops, hourly paid guest rooms and entertainment facilities are located many where in the terminal, so that the passengers can enjoy their stay before flying.

As a symbolic construction of the new airport or even the Guangzhou city, the terminal combines the most advanced architectural design and materials in the world, showing the charm of modern architecture. With the smoothly arch shaped outlook, it creates unlimited imagination for us and contains the beautiful idea that the airport is just a bridge connecting to the whole world. The building is constructed with steel frames and full height glazed curtain wall, making a clear and bright visual effect. The main building roofing system is designed to consist of two scattered and curved roofs that make the building look like a big flying bird. Besides, PTFE membrane is used for the skylight of the main building and then, together with the glass skylight on the corridor roof, natural light can be introduced to the terminal. In daytime the shining light and shadow make the building feel like a magic world and at night, a crystal palace.

The new airport will be full of subtropical features: the south working area is to be surrounded with two scenic channels, to which sanitary water from the airport is to be discharged after strict treatment, and the river banks are to be covered by trees and flowers. The 220,000m2 outdoor parking lots in north and south of the terminal will be shaded with plenty of banyan trees. The land in north of the terminal is to be developed in the long term phase but in the initial stage it will become a huge picture painted with different plants. Together with the greenery between the roads, in the squares and terraces, the airport will really be a precious garden in the city and the travellers from all over the world will have great sense on the culture and customs in South China area.

In order to build the new airport in step with the municipal construction, land control for the area adjacent to the new airport has been considered by the Municipal Government. The new airport is the core, in which the airfield will take an area of 15 kilometres and around it a 300-meter-wide greenbelt. Next to the core is the 88 kilometres non-construction area which civil construction is firmly restricted to ensure the open clearance in the north of Guangzhou. The outer area holding approximately 152kilometres is reserved for related passenger and logistic service centers.

The new Baiyun Airport takes an important role in the Guangzhou municipal construction. After the new airport puts in to use, the existing airport will, according to the municipal's overall development plan, be closed and rebuilt to a regional center with business, financial, accommodation and entertainment facilities. The new airport will function as an air transport center in the north of Guangzhou and will, with Nansha Port in the south and the Economic Zone in the east of Guangzhou, be the basis for realizing the municipal's development strategy. As one of the three air hubs of the country, the new Baiyun Airport will take the lead to follow the international practice in marketing and management, make full use of the flight network, upgrade the passenger and logistic services in Guangzhou as well as other South China area and make contribution to the economic development in the region. We are sure that the new Baiyun Airport will be a rising star in the world civil aviation industry.
