Do You Make Use of Free Public WIFI in Guangzhou?

Updated Beijing Time

Source: Lifeofguangzhou.com

The Guangzhou government offers free WIFI (Wireless_GZ) to net surfers, a service considered to be a convenience to the public. A survey taken by the New Express Daily via its official wechat account, however, found that 68% of the respondents never use the government's free public WIFI. The report showed that only 24.5% of respondents had taken advantage of the free WIFI.

Statistics released by the Guangzhou Information and Technology Bureau this past January showed 99 areas available for free WIFI in the city and 1,363 wireless access points offered by the Guangzhou government. What's more, 42 additional free WIFI areas and 347 more access points will be put into use soon, primarily in museums, hospitals and bus stations. Furthermore, each district has bought in total 6,748 access points in 1,355 areas to offer free WIFI service to users. In practice, however, the free WIFI is found to be limited in coverage, unclear in its markings and complicated in password verification.

The report criticized the fact that automatic connection can not be made. And even after successful connection, many users still fail to get online. Transportation junctions such as Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, Guangzhou Railway Station and Guangzhou South Railway Station, are places where WIFI is strongly needed by passengers. However, the free WIFI offered by the government is rarely easy to use at those points. Other WIFI service from railway stations and the airport are more accessible, such as AIRPORT-
FREE-WiFi offered by the Baiyun airport.

The report finally suggested that local government officials should examine the daily operation of the free WIFI. For example, government's effort to urge the development of free WIFI in railway stations and metro stations would be beneficial to people's daily lives and would connect people to their government.
