Free Metro Leads to Surge in Passenger Volume and Discontent

Updated Beijing Time

New measures are being implemented to cope with the significant rise in the number of passengers on Guangzhou's public transport network which is now free but saturated since the vehicle limitation measures were implement on November 1st.

Statistics from Guangzhou Metro Company show that over 7.8 million passengers took metro on November 1st and have since averaged 6.5 million people per day. This surge has forced some stations in downtown areas to close temporarily and implement crowd control measures which have lead to long queue and lots of waiting.
