Seasoned campaigner Alex Liew is not looking at selection for the Guangzhou Asian Games as a final fling with the national bowling squad.

Although he has served the country for 14 years in the sport, Alex believes that he still has more left in the tank to be in the national team for another two or three years.

"I have been bowling well lately and my last honour for the country was winning the silver medal in the doubles event of the men's world championships in Munich last month (with Muhd Nur Aiman)," said the 34-year-old.

"I may be one of the oldest members in the team but I don't think my time is up yet."

Alex, who joined the national team in 1996, helped Malaysia nail a team silver medal at the world and Asian championships in 2006.

He went through a rough patch last year when he tried to change his technique in bowling but this year promises to be a better one for him after switching to his old style.

"I changed my technique last year because I thought it would make me a better bowler," said Alex.

"But it didn't suit me well and I decided to return to my old ways. It has been fruitful to me thus far this year ... I'm back winning medals."

National chief coach Holloway Cheah is expected to make his selection of a six-man and six-woman team for the Asiad by the end of the week.

The men's bowlers in the training squad for the Games are Adrian Ang, Zulmazran Zulkifli, Alex, Daniel Lim, Aaron Kong, Mohd Syafiq Ridhwan and Aiman.

Those vying for places in the women's squad are Shalin Zulkifli, Esther Cheah, Sin Li Jane, Wendy Chai, Zatil Iman Abdul Ghani, Zandra Aziela, Sharon Koh and Siti Safiyah Amirah.

If Holloway opts for experience over youth in naming the squad, Alex should be travelling to Guangzhou in November.
