Guangzhou Development District officials announced on March 16 that the renovation scheme for Dongyuan Hotel in the district's western zone has been finalized. The existing buildings on the site will be torn down to make way for a square for the leisure and recreation of local residents. A commercial center and hotel-style apartment complexes will also be built in the surrounding areas. When the renovation project is completed, a brand-new "Tianhe Town" will emerge in the eastern part of Guangzhou.
Dongyuan Hotel opened in 1988 and has been in service for 22 years; as a result, it shows a lot of wear and tear. Under the final renovation scheme, the existing buildings will be demolished to build a public square with a gross floor area of approximately 15,000 square meters. And a shopping center with five stories (including one basement floor) will be constructed on a land plot between Dongyuan Hotel and Mingzhu Hotel. The new shopping facility will have a site area of 7,271 square meters and a gross floor area of about 17,800 square meters.
