Recreational District Emerges on Nanhua Xi Lu

Updated Beijing Time

Unlike Shanghai, Beijing or Hong Kong, Guangzhou does not possess its own RBD (Recreational Business District) which is always regarded as the highlight of tourism and popular culture in a modern metropolis. But things are set to change now that the local authorities have proposed Nanhua Xi Lu to become the center of Guangzhou's nightlife and tourism.

Located on the banks of the Pearl River just opposite Shamian Island, Nanhua Xi Lu is one of Guangzhou's old historical neighborhoods which still preserves many Lingnan characteristics. The streets are lined with a number of old traditional buildings and monuments, especially Qing Dynasty residential houses known as Qilou.

According to the authorities, whilst developing the RBD, they will focus on maintaining the original style of the old city. However, it remains to be seen if the authorities can just "create" a nightlife center. In other cities such as Shanghai and Hong Kong, it has taken decades for neighborhoods to emerge and become popular amongst the people and its success if often due to private initiatives. What shall be the key to Nanhua Xi's success?
