A statement was issued recently by Guangzhou Customs warning citizens of an increase in express deliveries from overseas used to smuggle drugs into the country. The authorities remind people that those who sign for the mail can also be put in detention even if they claim to be ignorant of the parcel's content.
Since July 2009, 101 cases of drug smuggling through the mail were reported by Guangzhou Customs, approximately one every two days. Two "sample clothes" sent from India to Changsha were seized at Baiyun Airport last August and officers found yellow powder hidden in 39 buttons on the clothes which later were proven to be 102g of heroin. Just a few days after, an express from Uganda to Foshan was blocked by Guangzhou Customs and nearly 1Kg of bhang was found in the parcel.
