Sun Yat-sen University formed a center for Confucian studies on March 5. The center will specialize in the research and teaching of Confucianism.

The center is part of the university's plan to build an advanced research institute. It is also the first research arm of the institute. According to its president Gan Yang, the institute is aimed at "bridging classics and modernity, Chinese and Western studies, and the disciplines of humanities." To this end, six specialized research centers are planned, and the Confucianism center is one of them.

Sun Yat-sen University professor Feng Dawen stated that the Confucianism program will enhance the moral education of the students and "inspire" the students and help them rid "worldliness".

Academically, the center will focus on studies relating to the social crises resulting from modernization and the rise of China. Professor Feng says that the center's academic inquiry may begin with soul-searching for social crises which "plunders others, nature, and the future".
