High blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and chronic respiratory diseases have become the top four illnesses that threaten people's health in Guangzhou, according to the city's "Fourth Sanitation Survey."

The survey covered over 25,500 citizens and shows that the incidence rate of the four diseases in every 1,000 people is much higher than 5 years ago. Further more, some diseases that were thought only to occur in the city are now appearing in the countryside.

Experts remarked that, an aging population, a polluted environment, daily stress and lack of exercise is the cause of these chronic diseases which result in diminished physical and mental health.
