Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport began to undergo a major renovation lately with an additional 20 reconstruction or expansion projects to ensure the smooth coming and going of 40,000 distinguished guests to the Guangzhou Asian Games in 2010.
Long lines in front of the security checkpoints at peak times remains a bottleneck that has been impeding the airport's development. The security lanes expansion project launched last March is scheduled for completion by the end of November. By then, the number of security checkpoints will have been increased from the present 25 to 52, including six for international departure. This will visibly help reduce the passengers' waiting time.
According to a three-year goal set by Baiyun International Airport Co., Ltd., the airport is to make its way into the ranks of the world's top 40 airports in terms of service by 2009, the world's top 20 by 2010 and the world's top ten by 2011. The airport's overall service is expected to be upgraded across the board.
