Pearl River Crossing, an annual event on the mother river of Guangzhou, South China, will be held at 9:50 - 11:00 on July 18, different from the previous sessions in the afternoon.

The time change is said as a tide and a reasonable temperature might be found in the morning, and swimmers will perhaps feel good in the water.

Each healthy people aging 15-65 and capable to swim 2,000 meters within 80 minutes is welcome to sign up for the event. A swimming test is needed as a part of registration.

On July 18, 2,000 selected swimmers in 40 squads will be organized to swim between the waterfront at the Northern Entrance of Sun Yat-sen University and the Xinghai Concert Hall on Ersha Island.

In case of bad weather, the event will be postponed to July 25.

Previously the river was not clean enough to swim due to pollution. Thanks to local government’s efforts, the water quality has been improved.

In 2006 the municipality began to organize Pearl River crossings, attracting a lot of locals and even foreigners.
