Life of Guangzhou - Renmin Road Qilou Gets New Look

It was learned from the Yuexiu District that as a model block of architectural appearance rectification on Guangzhou's main roads, Renmin Road took the lead in initiating the "face" lifting project to welcome the Guangzhou Asian Games. More than 400 buildings along the road would be completely renovated after the experiment.

The Qilou (sotto portico) at the crossing of Longjindong Road and Renminzhong Road were covered with vermeil ceramic tiles and its main pillars were covered with caesious culture bricks. "It's much more beautiful after its renovation at the beginning of this year!" said a storekeeper from a garment store.

Chen Xiaoquan, Vice Director of the Yuexiu District Construction Bureau said that Renmin Road was 4,562 meters of length with over 600 buildings along the road, among which more than 400 would be renovated. As for the portal of Xiguan, Qilou was the experimental block for the renovation project of the Qilou streets along Renmin Road. "All the plans for the buildings to be renovated were all tailor-made", said Chen Xiaoquan, which would be designed in accordance with the principles of "Repair old and build new buildings like the original ones" and in harmony with nearby buildings: keeping the completeness of the buildings by cleaning up, dismantling anti-theft networks and putting them in order, restoring traditional appearances as much as possible of the buildings with era features and cultural relics value and keeping the special materials.
