Expansion Planned for Guangzhou to Qingyuan Expressway

Updated Beijing Time

Source: english.gz.gov.cn

It was announced on February 3 that the proposed expansion project for the Guangzhou-Qingyuan Expressway had passed the environmental impact assessment by provincial environmental protection authorities. The project will kick off within the year and is slated for competition by the end of 2012. It will expand the expressway from four to eight lanes, dramatically increasing its handling capacity.

The expansion project is located in Baiyun and Huadu Districts and Qingyuan City. It starts from the Qingfeng Toll Station at Shijing in Baiyun District and ends at Henghe Town in Qingyuan City, stretching 57.72 kilometers. The expanded expressway will have eight lanes and a design speed of 100 kilometers per hour. The expansion works will cost about RMB 5.05 billion.

The Guangzhou-Qingyuan Expressway consists of three sections – the Guangzhou-Huadu Expressway, the Huadu-Qinghua Expressway, and the Guangzhou-Qingyuan North Expressway. Since their opening, traffic has increased dramatically. The Guangzhou-Huadu section of the Guangzhou-Qingyuan Expressway has been playing an instrumental role in alleviating traffic pressure on the Beijing-Zhuhai Expressway, which is currently being expanded into double lines, and on the Qingyuan-Lianzhou Highway, which is presently being transformed into an expressway. The expansion project will help the Guangzhou-Qingyuan Expressway cope with anticipated rising traffic.
