Zheng faced four break points -- but saved them all -- while breaking the serve of Tiantian Sun five times in a 6-0, 6-1 rout. Zheng won nearly two-thirds of the points in the match.
Fifth-seeded Gisela Dulko had more trouble but also advanced to the second round, posting a 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 6-4 win over Tatiana Poutchek. Dulko's next opponent will be Arantxa Rus, who beat Yanina Wickmayer 6-7 (2-7), 6-2, 6-4 in her first-round match Tuesday.
Also Tuesday, seventh-seeded Pauline Parmentier defeated Xinyun Han 6-1, 7-5; Jill Craybas beat Anastasia Pivovarova 6-2, 6-4, and Yi-Fan Xu advanced 6-3, 6-1 over Stephanie Dubois.
Vera Zvonareva, who won the bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics, is the top seed at Guangzhou.
The tournament champion, to be determined Sunday, will win $28,000.
