So far, Guangzhou has invested RMB180 million a year in the software, animation & comic industries, of which RMB30 million was awarded for broadcasting of original animation & comic works produced by movie studios in Guangzhou and RMB15 million for training professionals in the software, animation & comic industries, said Jin Jiquan, an official from the Administration of Press, Publication, Radio and Television of Guangzhou Municipality. Recently, 17 original animation & comic films have won over RMB13.5 million awarded by Guangzhou Municipality.
In the near future, not only would old workshops, which cover about 200 thousand square meters, be renovated for the purpose of developing the animation & comic industry, but a section of Xianlie Zhong Lu, which is three kilometers long, will turn into an "innovation avenue" where businesses engaged in design and exhibition of animation & comic products would collect. Buildings along the road would be redecorated, thus embodying Guangzhou characteristics of this industry. Jin said that with the project to be completed in 2009, it would be a place where consumers can buy or experience innovative animation & comic products.
Also, Guangzhou would try to enhance its status as an international metropolis through cartoons and mascots as well as the research & development of products like toys, costumes, souvenirs, comics and animations.
