With motorbikes prohibited in Guangzhou, more and more citizens have turned to bicycles. However, the current traffic facilities have endured increasing pressure caused by the approximately 800,000 bicycles across Guangzhou. Therefore, deputies of the Guangzhou Municipal People's Congress have made a proposal to resume or set bicycle lanes on arteries and build bicycle parking lots near the subway stations as soon as possible.

As for such a proposal, the officials in charge of traffic replied that bicycle lanes were available on most arteries in Guangzhou except Dongfeng Lu and Guangyuan Lu for the sake of traffic safety as well as the functions of the streets. The lanes are usually 1.5 meters wide, built against the standards of relevant national regulations.

They also said that bicycles were encouraged to be widely used in areas such as newly-built communities where the relevant facilities for bicycles can be constructed. However, they added, too many bicycles in the busy commercial centers in downtown Guangzhou would cause trouble.

As for the construction of bicycle parking lots at subway stations, they replied that such facilities would be built around both bus terminals in the suburbs and subway stations along Metro Line 3, 4 and 5. The lots at subway stations were predicted to provide space of 25 thousand square meters to park 13,000 bicycles. Currently, bicycle parking lots along Metro 1 and 2 are under construction and are scheduled to begin operation within this year.
