GZ to Increase 150 Thousand Parking Places in Three Years

Large underground parking lots would be built in three years at the Tianhe Sports Center, Pazhou Complex, Grand City Plaza and the Guangzhou Eastern Railway Station, providing parking space for 150,000 vehicles. On July 8th, officials told the reporter that the proposal on parking in Guangzhou put forward at the 5th session of the Standing Committee of the 11th Guangzhou Municipal Committee of the CPPCC was approved by Zhu Xiaodan, Party Secretary of Guangzhou Municipal Committee of the CPC, member of the Standing Committee of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the CPC and Director of the Standing Committee of Guangzhou People's Congress, and replied by 18 government departments including the Communications Commission of Guangzhou Municipality, the Bureau of Education of Guangzhou Municipality and the Construction Commission of Guangzhou Municipality.

Officials of the Communications Commission of Guangzhou Municipality said that a special team had been formed to solve the problems caused by parking and meanwhile the Municipal Government had made a three-year plan (between 2008 and 2010) to increase 150,000 parking places. Plans for newly-added parking facilities were being examined by the Bureau of Urban Planning of Guangzhou Municipality. In 2007, 33,140 parking places were added.

Officials also pointed out that there were over one million vehicles in Guangzhou, exerting great pressure on the land and road resources in downtown Guangzhou. It would be impossible to thoroughly solve parking problems merely by increasing parking places. Therefore, besides increasing 50 thousand parking places annually in the following three years, more efforts should be made to enhance the efficiency of parking management.
