Guangzhou citizens donate to support relief efforts in Sichuan earthquake region

The earthquake of Wenchuan captured the attention of numerous people in Guangzhou City.

These days the Bureau of Civil Affairs of Guangzhou Municipality was crowded with warm-hearted citizens and enterprises who came to make donations. Statistics showed that, as of May 15, All waks of life donated money totaling RMB 62.66 million (excluding the donations from Guangzhou CPC Municipal Committee and the Guangzhou Municipal Government).

The Guangzhou CPC Municipal Committee and the Guangzhou Municipal Government issued an emergency notice and An Open Letter to Guangzhou People on May 13, requesting the cadres and members of the CPC and government organizations at various municipal levels respond to the call of the Central Committee of the CPC, the State Council, the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the CPC and the Guangdong Provincial Government to play the leading role in providing financial and clothing aid to rebuild the homes of the masses of victims in the disaster region.

The government also solemnly called on citizens in all walks of life, and particularly Guangzhou citizens, to actively demonstrate their benevolence by donating money and clothing to help disaster victims in China to recover and resolve the hardships of the people in the disaster region by their love and efforts on many fronts.

At the same time, the Guangzhou CPC Municipal Committee and the Guangzhou Municipal Government sent their heartfelt condolences to the citizens of Sichuan Province to and Guangzhou’s sister city of Chengdu, offering donations of RMB 5 million and RMB 2 million respectively.

In addition, the Economic and Trade Commission of Guangzhou Municipality urgently issued the Emergency Circular on Efficient Handling of the Support Work of Earthquake Relief Materials on May 13, calling on the economic and trade departments, industrial associations and enterprises of various districts and for county level cities to establish relevant working organizations and practice a 24-hour on-duty system, standing-by to assist in the transfer of disaster relief materials.

At present, the economic and trade departments, industrial associations and enterprises within the economic and trade system have defined the stock situation of emergency supplies, assessed productivity levels and identified key supply channels for disaster relief materials that will facilitate immediate transfer.

At 02:30 in the early morning of May 13, upon the request of Guangdong provincial rescue workers, the Economic and Trade Commission of Guangzhou Municipality organized the leading retail enterprises including the Grandbuy Group and others to supply over 2,000 pairs of cotton yarn and canvas gloves to the disaster region that same night. And on that very same afternoon the Grandbuy Group organized an additional 300 tents, 1,800 quilts and quantities of other donated materials at a value of over RMB 400,000 all of which arrived in Chengdu by 11 p.m. on the very same evening.

The CR Vanguard, Dongwang and other enterprises raised a quantity of materials worth over RMB 500,000 including instant noodles, biscuits, mineral waters, etc., which were ready to be transferred to the disaster region at any moment.
