More taxis are to be put into public service in Guangzhou to relieve the demanding pressure, according to the city's Communications Bureau.

Seven hundred taxis were added to service last October. But taxis are still in short supply as the daily volume of passengers has increased by some 60 thousand person-time, as per local government's data.

Especially during the Canton Fair in March and April of 2008, the occupancy rate of taxis has risen to 70.92% and 71.18% separately with 3.93% and 1.39% increase than the same periods of last year.

What's more, this number has reached 73.75% between 8am and 10pm, ranking the highest in Guangzhou's history.

The coming taxi reinforcements will go through public enquiry and bidding, said an official of the Guangzhou Bureau of Communications.
