Metro Line 2 and 8 would be extended 28.55 kilometers in total. The project is scheduled for completion before the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games when over 80% of the sports venues for the Games could be reached by metro.

According to the plans for the extension project, there would be 15 stations along the extended section of Metro Line 2 between the new Guangzhou Railway Station in the south to Jiahe in the north and 5 stations along the extended section of Metro Line 8 between Wanshengwei in the east to the Culture Park in the west. So far, civil engineering has been carried out in all 20 section lots along the extended lines and the car depot in Jiahe. In addition, 18 of the 20 stations were under construction.

For Metro Line 8, the extended section would greatly improve the transportation in the old urban areas in Haizhu District by connecting the three busiest streets - Gongye Avenue, Baogang Avenue and Jiangnan Avenue. For Metro Line 2, the extended sections would help shorten the distance between the new Guangzhou Railway Station and the downtown of Panyu District.
