Guangzhou's Bus Network to Be Optimized

The bus route networks of Guangzhou Municipality will be optimized in the largest scale reorganization in the history of the city and the final Optimization Solution will be implemented during the period May 17th to July 31st. The Solution involves 217 bus routes, including 74 newly opened minibus routes, 28 newly opened rush hour express routes, 96 optimized routes and 19 routes with optimized transportation capacity.

Deputy Director of the Guangzhou Transportation Commission, Jie Yalin, said that the Solution aims to optimize Guangzhou's bus routes in line with various indicators such as the total number of bus routes, route density, bus stop coverage and the total number of buses. The total number of bus routes will increase from the current 469 to 576 routes, adding 107 new routes. The route density will increase from 3.81Km/Km2 to 3.93Km/Km2. The bus stop coverage in 500 meters will increase from 92% to 95.3%.

The primary purpose of the bus route optimization is to alleviate traffic jams during rush hours by opening 28 new express routes and optimizing the transportation capacity of 19 routes. Additionally, the bus route network will be connected to the metro network more effectively to offer more convenience for citizens. The public transportation services in peripheral areas will also be improved for residents in rural areas and in urban-rural fringe areas. Citizens may also enjoy these more efficient, time saving transportation services.

The Guangzhou Transportation Commission will print one million copies of the Public Transportation Guide of Guangzhou Municipality and send them without cost to citizens' homes by mail. The Transportation Guide covers all public transportation modes including the bus routes and the optimization plan, the metro network, the water bus network and information on changing between buses, metro trains and water buses. Information about the new links is included in the Guide to provide citizens with the latest and most comprehensive transportation information possible.

Jie Yalin stressed that the Guangzhou transportation authorities would follow up on the effects of the Optimization Solution to get feedback from citizens and conduct further measures to continuously improve the transportation route network.
