Brazil plans to open a consulate-general in Guangzhou this year to provide support to Brazilian living in the region and to help companies interested in operating in southern China, the representative of the Brazilian Foreign Affairs Ministry in Sao Paulo told macauhub.
“The decision has been made and Brazil will have a consulate-general in Guangzhou. We have not yet set a date, but it will be this year,” said ambassador Jadiel Ferreira de Oliveira, who in December 2007 took part in a mission from the Municipal Council of Sao Paulo to China.
“The idea is an old one, but recently we made the decision and it depends only on budget and other administrative issues,” he said.
According to the head of the head of the Brazilian Foreign Affairs Ministry for Sao Paulo, the main aim is to provide consular assistance to Brazilians living in southern China.
“We will provide all consular services, such as issuing documents and certificate, marriages, passports and others, as well as promotional activities,” he said.
“Brazil now has a consulate-general in Shanghai and a consular service at the embassy in Beijing. But they are very far from anyone in the south of the country,” he noted.
As well as this, the Guangzhou consulate-general will provide support to Brazilian companies wanting to do business in that region of China.
“At this consulate we will also work in partnership with Chinese chambers in Brazil that are looking for some kind of help to carry out their activities in the region of Guangzhou,” he said.
The Brazilian consulate in Guangzhou will likely have a staff of three, according to the ambassador, who said he believed this number could “reach 15 or 20.”
It is estimated that around 3,000 Brazilian live in Dongguan, in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong, 800 in Beijing and 1,500 in Shanghai.
