On March 6th, the Foreign Affairs Office of the Guangdong Provincial Government signed a Land Use Agreement with the General Consulate of Thailand in Guangzhou for the latter's use of the Guangzhou Chigang Consulate Zone.
Thailand is the first country to sign such an agreement with China since the zone was planned in 1988.
It was learned from the foreign affairs office that Guangzhou is home to 32 foreign consulates. Most of them are scattered among the hotels and office buildings, making them difficult to be accessed by citizens due to the limited space and scattered locations. The zone which began to be planned in 1988 covers a total area of 100,000 square meters, of which 53,000 meters was available for use.
As Royal Thai Consulate-General in Guangzhou Mr. Nuttavudh Photisaro points out, Chigang is endowed with favorable environmental and geographic conditions and the effort to relocate the general consulate hereto signifies closer China-Thailand relations. He goes on to say that he hopes that the consulate house will be completed prior to the 2010 Asian Games.
