Metro Line 5 currently under construction is scheduled to begin operation on September 28th, 2009 or on the National Day (Oct. 1st) of 2009. Meanwhile, preferential policies on booking will be implemented after being passed at executive meetings.

Sources from the Guangzhou Metro Corporation said that due to complicated geographical conditions and the removal of constructions concerned, it was still hard to say exactly when the whole line would open. In any case, the corporation would speed up construction and try to complete Metro Line 5 on September 28th or on the National Day of 2009.

A hearing was held on January 9th, 2008 to collect public opinions on preferential policies related to booking. The revised policies would be put into practice after being passed at the executive meetings. Officials from the Guangzhou Metro Corporation said that the relevant work in relation to preferential policies has been performed. Once the policies were approved and initiated, the company could make the payment system of Yangchengtong cards come into operation within ten days. Passengers with Yangchengtong cards can buy a discounted ticket with 20% off or enjoy relevant preferential treatment. Due to upgrade and adjustment of public transport system, preferential policies concerning monthly passes may be realized in half a year.
