At the 3rd Session of the 13th Guangzhou People's Congress held on February 17th, Vice Mayor Xu Zhibiao told the deputies present that Guangzhou would invest RMB500 to RMB800 million to build a museum at the site of the Nanyue Kingdom Palace in honor of the 2222nd anniversary of the founding of Guangzhou.

The news was confirmed by Gong Erzhen, Secretary of Yuexiu District, who expressed that as an important historic place, the construction of the museum, a decision made by the Municipal Government, won support from both the Yuexiu District Government and the district Party Committee.

Vice Mayor Xu said that a detailed plan was being formulated and would be publicized to citizens soon.

Sources from the district department in charge of planning said that the district government would work hard to make the museum a world heritage. The first phase of the construction project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2009, by which visitors can enjoy the historic relics at an exhibition hall of 23,000 square meters covering the middle and southern parts of the site of the Nanyue Kingdom Palace.
