Liuxi River Listed State Aquatic Products Germplasm Resources Preservation Area

According to the Conghua Municipal Government, Ministry of Agriculture released the first batch of 40 State Aquatic Products Germplasm Resources Preservation Areas, the Liuxi River of Guangzhou listed. Also included are State Lobster Germplasm Resources Preservation Area in Shangxiaochuan Island and State Mystus Guttatus Germplasm Resources Preservation Area in Shikuhe in Guangdong Province.

The Liuxi River State Aquatic Products Germplasm Resources Preservation Area established with the approval of Ministry of Agriculture is mainly to protect Spinibarbus hollandi Oshima, the so-called “Guangyan Fish”. The fish has the efficacy of tonifying the kidney and invigorating the spleen, which can be used to treat soreness and weakness of waist and knees and is very popular among the locals. After the establishment of the preservation area, the fish ban period within the protection area will be changed to March-August from the original June-December, making the fish ban period much longer and the protection strength much stronger.

According to a survey, the two major factors threatening the ecology of Liuxi River are pollution and fishing stress.
