On November 3rd, Green Commuting, a public-interest activity, was launched in Guangzhou.
The purpose of this activity is to call on citizens to drive as little as possible. There are one million motor vehicles in Guangzhou. One-day-less driving will result in about 33 thousand fewer vehicles being used each year. As a result, air pollution will be reduced and traffic pressure will be eased.
Motor vehicle exhaust emissions are the major source of pollution in Guangzhou. Lin Zhide, Chairman of Guangzhou International Union of Wetlands Protection and Construction, said that compared with Car Free Day, an activity popular in other cities, Green Commuting was a more suitable program for Guangzhou. Such an activity will enhance drivers' awareness of environmental protection. Therefore, they will consciously reduce the number of days when they utilize their car.
To give the program strength individuals and work units are required to sign letter of commitment to green commuting with individuals being under the supervision of their work units.
