According to Guangzhou's traffic police department, from October 15, all officers on duty are equipped with a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant). With this device, a traffic officer on the road has instant access to the information on vehicles and drivers violating traffic rules and can send an electric ticket to the offending driver in 30 minutes, with which the driver can pay the fine at the nearest bank.
The PDA receives and sends signals via a wireless CDMA network. When a ticket is being printed out from the PDA, the content of the ticket is also transmitted to a background processing system at the traffic police headquarters. Tickets issued by the PDA are waterproof. A driver can pay the fine at the bank 30 minutes after receipt of the ticket; previously, a driver had to wait for a day before paying a fine.
The traffic police department said that in the future, the PDA may be able to accept on-the-spot payment of fines by bank cards.
