The river dredging work at Guangzhou Port will be completed by the end of this month, and will allow 50,000-ton ships to sail through the 15.5-meter-deep water channel in both directions, according to the Guangzhou Marine Affairs Bureau.

The channel will go into operation together with the second phase of the Nansha Port at the southern end of Guangzhou.

The conclusion of the navigation block in Ling-ding channel has been extended to September 25 for the good of the work, while dredging is almost complete.

The dredge will greatly improve channel conditions, which have been a major setback to the port's development.

Guangzhou Port lies on the southeastern outskirts of the city and entered the top half of the world's top ten ports, with a cargo throughput of over 300 million tons last year.
