The Ministry of Culture recently released their first group of recommended representatives for state-level intangible cultural heritage projects. The 70-year-old Cheng Shaofang is the only one from Guangzhou on the list.

The list includes five fields: folk literature, acrobatics and athletics, folk art, traditional handicraft skills, and traditional medicine. Seven people of Guangdong province were elected, namely: Foshan board picture master Feng Bingtang, Guangzhou embroidery Master Chen Shaofang, Chaozhou embroidery Master Ling Zhicheng, Chaozhou woodcarving master Li Denong and Chen Peichen, Shiwan pottery master Liu Zemian, and Tuan ink-slab master Cheng Wen.

Guangdong Province recently issued the 11th Five-Year plan for the Development of Cultural Industry to promote the development of arts & crafts. To foster talent growth, allowances will be provided for people who train apprentices.

The Plan also disclosed that a complex accommodating provincial arts and crafts resources would be built in Guangzhou, and an "arts park" and a "folk collections park" would be established for transaction, collection, display, exchange, research and training on arts and crafts. They will also be nice places for people to visit.

During the "11th Five-Year Plan" period, the output value of Guangdong province's arts and crafts industry will increase at over 15% per year; by 2010, the added value of the arts and crafts industry will reach RMB 50 billion.
