On April 24th, well-known experts in urban planning, environmental & ecological fields gathered in Guangzhou and gave their advice for the 2010 Asian Games (Guangzhou) Village planning.
Having listened to the exports' suggestions, Mayor Zhang Guangning said that the Village should meet the needs of the Asian Games, as well as promote the construction of Guangzhou's New Town. He called to build a Lingnan–style modern new city with a beautiful environment and complete infrastructure. The Asian Games Village, to be located in the middle east of Panyu district, is an important part of the Southern Expansion projects and the initial stage of the New Town project.
He Jingtang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Guo Mengzhuo, and a renowned designer of China, Xing Tong, chief architect of Shanghai World Expo and other heavyweight experts and scholars confirmed the location of the Asian Games Village. They also gave the following suggestions: to play the role of rail transportation; to fully utilize the venues after the Games; to continue to explore and reflect Lingnan's cultural background and characteristics; and to protect the existing natural and ecological environment. Experts said that the development of residential areas and the demand of target groups in the future should be considered for the athlete's village design and that the scale of the Media Village could be reduced to some extent. The construction grade and orientation of the Media Village, the athlete's village and residential area will be carefully evaluated. The Asian Games Village will provide a new model for the development and construction of Guangzhou's residential areas.
