The 12 river-spanning bridges in Guangzhou will get a facelift in anticipation of the 2010 Asian Games.

In late 2006, the Guangzhou Construction Investment and Development Co., Ltd. (GCID) announced that to enhance the landscape along the Pearl River in anticipation of the 2010 Asian Games, it would solicit high-quality landscaping designs for the 12 bridges – the Dongpu Bridge, Pazhou Bridge, South China Bridge, Guangzhou Bridge, Haiyin Bridge, Jiangwan Bridge, Haizhu Bridge, Liberation Bridge, People's Bridge, Hedong Bridge, Pearl River Bridge, and Yabiaosha Bridge.

After the announcement, dozens of domestic and international design institutes and individual designers signed up to provide designs. After multiple rounds of evaluation, GCID has identified the top three candidates.
