Guangzhou government began to prohibit motorcycle riding on Jan, 1st, 2007 but permitted a 15 day grace period which ends, today (Jan.16), the deadline for the ending of motorcycle riding in Guangzhou. Traffic police will detain motorcycles and strengthen their efforts of management at night. Motorcycle riders will be fined 200 yuan.

Thanks to dramatically reduced competition, some motorcycle taxi drivers earned more during the past 15 days. "Following the ban on driving motorcycles, there were fewer drivers on the roads." said Mr. Liu. He gained about one thousand yuan over the past two weeks.

Special Management of 'Handicapped Taxis'

The Guangzhou municipal traffic police department announced that it will strengthen control over illegal operations of disabled person's vehicles. Handicapped riders of scooters are banned for taking either passengers or goods. Illegal operators of handicapped scooters will be detained and the driver will be fined several hundred yuan at most.
