First "Reading Month" Launched in The City

Guangzhou's first Reading Month and Book Expo were launched at Tianhe Sports Center  yesterday, as the Guangzhou Daily reports.

Vice-Secretary of Guangzhou Commission of the CCP Mr. Fang Xuan delivered the opening speech with Director General of Municipal Publicity Department Mr. Chen Jianhua presiding over the opening ceremony. Also there were Vice-Mayor of Guangzhou Li Zhuobin and Director General of Guangdong Provincial Administration of Press and Publications Chen Junnian.

In his speech, Mr. Fang said Guangzhou's government paid great attention to its citizens' cultural development and a series of widespread reading activities over the coming 10 years were already in planning.  The activities were targeted at fostering public interest in reading, especially teenagers, by means of book exhibitions, speeches and reading contests.

The '06 Guangzhou Book Exhibition, the largest in recent years with over 100,000 books on show, was opened at the same time.
