THE cross-Pearl River swim, previously planned to be held in August near Zhongda Wharf, is now set for July 12 and still may change according to the weather and hydrology conditions.
To ensure the safety of swimmers, individual application will not be accepted. Swimmers will be selected among the swimming athletes and advanced amateurs from residential communities and governmental agencies. The specific plan is waiting for approval by Guangzhou government.
Wang Jinsan, a well-known environmentalist at Sun Yat-sen University, said that according to the data of past years, the water quality in July is better than that in August, and that heavy rainfall is good for the improvement of the water quality of the Pearl River.
In May and June of last year, because of the rainstorm in Guangxi province, the water quality of the Pearl River reached grade III, which is rare in history. Wang said the rainstorm of recent days in Guangzhou is an advantage to the Pearl River swimming event. (translated by Guangzhou Association of Foreign Affairs Translators)
