THE excavation of the wooden slips in the Nanyue Palace ruins — "the most important wooden slips of the Lingnan region", will be opened to the public this week.

Bureau of Culture of Guangzhou Municipality said that the rarely seen archaeological discovery will be opened from the 13th to 18th of May to mark International Museum Day.

After lying hidden beneath the King Yue Pavilion for over 2,000 years, the wooden slips will soon see the sky once again. During the public opening, the excavation process will be visible on a large screen set up in the square by the Construction Office of Nanyue Palace Museum.

The Nanyue Kingdom wooden slips will not only rewrite the history that no wooden or bamboo slip were to be found in Lingnan region, but also greatly widen the range of study of the history of the Nanyue Kingdom.

Some archaeologists have likened the importance of the discovery of the wooden slips for the Lingnan region to that of the discovery of the oracle bones found at Yinxu.
