When neighboring city Guangzhou banned motorcycles from downtown areas, Foshan started to consider similar actions. Recently, the Foshan People’s Consultative Committee announced its intention to banned motorcycles by 2020.
An investigation was carried out between May and June this year. The investigation committee has surveyed departments concerning security, transportation and city planning. 1000 questionnaires and online surveys have been distributed amongst government officials and citizens, 671 of which have been collected. 55% of the respondents believe motorcycles put pressure on the transportation network, and 64% believe motorcycles are harmful to the environment.
The investigation committee ended their report stating that motorcycles are convenient but unfortunately they create traffic problems and are a risk to social stability. But with so few people surveyed, drawing such an extreme conclusion might be unwise. The committee said the city should focus on developing the public transport network before gradually banning motorcycles.
