The building that was formerly home to the Shenzhen Museum on Tongxin Road will be renovated into an ancient art museum next year, said a senior cultural official Tuesday.

Chen Wei, director of the city’s cultural bureau, made the remarks on a radio phone-in talk show about the protection of the city’s cultural heritage.

He said the new art museum will mainly house collections of ancient bronze utensils, ceramics and paintings of the Lingnan School, one of the modern schools of Chinese brush painting, among other cultural relics.

Chen said the exhibition area will be expanded to more than 40,000 square meters from the previous 15,000. It will take about three years to finish the renovation and set up the exhibitions. He didn’t say when the art museum is expected to open to the public.

The Shenzhen Museum moved to its new location at the Citizens’ Center last year. More than 600,000 people have visited it since then.

The new location focuses on the city’s contemporary history, especially the achievements since the reform and opening started in 1979. The old location will focus more on the city’s ancient past, Chen said.

The art museum will also temporarily store art pieces for individual collectors.
