Wang Yang, Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the CPC and the Secretary of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the CPC, put forward a proposal for the construction of an economic zone covering Guangzhou, Foshan and Zhaoqing during a conference held in Zhaoqing on March 30th. According to this proposal, the economic zone is to be made up of three economic districts, namely those composed of the Guangzhou-Foshan-Zhaoqing, Shenzhen-Dong'guan-Huizhou and Zhuhai-Zhonghsan-Jiangmen districts.
On June 16th, a Guangzhou delegation, led by Zhu Xiaodan, Secretary of the Guangzhou Municipal Committee of the CPC and Mayor Zhang Guangning got together at Zhaoqing with officials from Foshan and Zhaowing, to share views on the prospects of cooperation between the three cities on issues concerning economic cooperation mechanisms, harmonious development between rural and urban areas, infrastructures, industrial development opportunities, environmental protection proposals and the joint management of public affairs with the aim of co-ordinating definition of a competitive edge for the proposed economic zone. It is expected that the three parties will sign an agreement on economic cooperation in the near future.
Statistics show that Guangzhou, Foshan and Zhaoqing feature outstanding and complimentary advantages in terms of relevant financial indicators (0.374 and 0.478 for Foshan and Zhaoqing respectively) Thus, therefore the three cities have seen that the promotion of both government and non-government cooperations in terms of economics and culture, and promoting the idea of creating a solid foundation for economic development is a win-win situation.
