The consul generals and official staff from more than 30 foreign consulates in Guangzhou began a four-city tour of Guangzhou, Dongguan, Shenzhen and Huizhou on August 25th, in hopes of developing a greater understanding of the significant changes brought by the reform and opening policy in Guangdong Province.

On August 27th the consulate officials visited Shenzhen, the third stop on their four-day East Pearl River Delta tour. Shenzhen was the first city to open up to the world since the 1970s in the People's Republic of China. Next to Hong Kong, Shenzhen is well known for its high level of economic development.

After visiting Shenzhen the consulate officials were very impressed, particularly surprised by its rapid economic development. Nonetheless, Shenzhen is facing the same economic adjustments as other cities in Guangdong.

In regards to the adjustment of the industrial structure in Shenzhen, the Consul General of the Republic of Korea, Jeon Jae Man, had much to say.

"I feel positive about the industrial structure adjustment in Guangdong. As far as I know, the government of Guangdong has a good command of the situation at present, and they are finding better ways for future development," Mr. Jeon said.

Over a decade ago, Korea also experienced a major industrial structure adjustment.

"I have supplied many documents on this problem to the Guangdong government, hoping to help them solve it. The government plays an important part in leading corporations down the right road." As to the service industry in Shenzhen, Jeon thinks encouragement by the government is essential.
