Three workers died and two were injured when a pier collapsed during construction of the Shenzhen Metro Line 3 in Longgang District yesterday.

The injured were taken to hospital and in stable condition last night.

The five were at work when the pier collapsed without warning at 3:30 p.m. on the section under construction in He’ao, Henggang Subdistrict.

A preliminary investigation showed illegal operations by workers was responsible for the accident.

The Longgang District Government yesterday ordered the suspension of the project and required an urgent safety inspection.

The accident, the third in the Metro construction this year, came days after Shenzhen Vice Mayor Zhang Siping criticized firms building the Metro lines for negligence, which had resulted in two cave-ins in March.

On March 9, a 43-meter section between Liyumen and Xin’an stations on the Metro Line 1 extension collapsed, cutting power supplies to the area. No casualties were reported.

Another section of the Metro Line 1 extension near the Qianhai Garden housing complex in Nanshan caved in March 10, causing a nearby road to sink by 10-30 meters. None of the 100 workers on the site were injured.
