Guangdong Mobile, China Mobile's subsidiary in Guangdong Province, recently launched its free "139.com" mobile unlimited storage email service to all subscribers, an official from Guangdong Mobile said.

"In the past, we offered three types of mobile email packages, each with different capacities and fees. Now, we are offering a free mobile email service with unlimited capacity," a Guangdong Mobile official said.

The service can be accessed through both mobile phones and computers. It supports attachments of up to 50 megabytes (MB), and allows subscribers to send 30 free text messages and 20 free multimedia messages to other China Mobile subscribers per month. It also provides a 1-gigabyte (GB) virtual hard drive.

In addition, Guangdong Mobile has launched an enhanced version of the service that offers more free text messages and multimedia messages and a 3-GB virtual hard drive for RMB 6 ($0.81) per month.

Previously, Guangdong Mobile charged from RMB 6 ($0.81) to RMB 18 ($2.42) per month for email boxes providing capacities of between 200 MB
and 1000 MB.

Use of Guangdong Mobile's mobile email services requires GPRS (general packet radio service) access. Guangdong Mobile offers a RMB 5 ($0.67) GPRS package with a monthly data cap of 100 MB.

Shanghai Mobile, China Mobile's subsidiary in Shanghai, offers a free mobile email service to subscribers with 20 MB of storage and allowing attachments of up to 4 MB. It also offers four other packages, costing between RMB 5 ($0.67) and RMB 30 ($4.04) per month, offering 500 MB to 6 GB of email storage.
