Senior officials who fail to meet their environmental protection targets over the next two years will not be promoted, according to mayor Xu Zongheng, the Southern Metropolis Daily reports.

Xu was quoted together with Li Hongzhong, Shenzhen's Party Secretary, as saying that environmental protection was one of Shenzhen's top priorities, as the city's space and resources are very limited.

The government will invest more than 100 billion yuan in environmental protection and form a volunteer group of more than 10,000 "environment protectors", they said.
