China's first international summit on recycling economy and sustainable development is being held Friday and Saturday at Wuzhou Guest House in Shenzhen, Guangdong.

The conference, jointly held by Boao Forum for Asia and the Shenzhen Municipal Government, is being attended by more than 400 senior government officials, entrepreneurs and scholars.

Long Yongtu, secretary general of Boao Forum, told a press conference Thursday that the organizers hoped China could learn from advanced countries about developing a recycling economy through the forum.

Among those expected to attend are Li Changjiang, minister of China's quality watchdog, Australian Parliament member Michael Johnson and Satoshi Nakazono, chief executive of the environment bureau of Kitakyushu City, Japan. The participants are also expected to include executives of well-known companies such as Chinese steel giant Bao Steel Corp., South Korean conglomerate SK and Danish biological company Novozymes.

The attendees will discuss a wide range of issues concerning a recycling economy, including legislative support and promotion, technological innovation, industrial structure adjustment, new energy and energy-saving housing.

Shenzhen Mayor Xu Zongheng told the press conference that Shenzhen was pushing ahead with its plan to create a recycling economy through various means.

The city government is promoting the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) on buses, and plans to build two seawater-desalination factories to deal with the city's water shortage, said Xu, adding that the city will adopt the most advanced technology in seawater treatment.

Xu also called on residents to understand the need for garbage-processing fees, which will be charged after July 1 next year, saying that it was a normal practice in developed countries. “Every penny of the fees will be used on garbage treatment,” said Xu. The urban management authority has proposed the monthly fee for garbage treatment be set at 13.5 yuan (US$1.69) per household, but the final decision has not been made yet.
