Egypt is expected to transport gas to Syria before the end of 2008, the Egyptian MENA news agency reported on Sunday.
Ahmed al-Ashmawi, head of the technical office in Egypt's petroleum ministry, made the remarks to MENA, noting that the Egyptian gas was scheduled to start flowing through the Arab gas pipeline from Egypt's el-Arish via Jordan to Syria on March 21, 2008.
The process was delayed due to technical preparations, he added.
Ashmawi noted that Egypt will pump nine billion cubic meters of gas to Syria in the first year, 2.5 to 6 million cubic meters per day, according to the agreement signed by Cairo and Damascus.
Egypt, Syria and Jordan is currently working to complete the project, which is a part of the Arab gas pipeline project that was estimated to cost one billion U.S. dollars, the Egyptian official said.
