MEXICO CITY -- The Mexican government Friday strongly condemned an attack on its consulate in New York city earlier in the day.

Mexico's Foreign Affairs Secretariat (SRE) said in a communiqué that at about 04:20 local time (0920 GMT) Friday, three windows of its consulate office in New York city were broken.

The SRE said that the incident caused the dislodging of personnel working inside the consulate and that nobody was injured.

The motivation and the type of devices used to break the windows are yet unknown, and New York's police have already begun to investigate this case, the SRE stated.

U.S. television reported that two explosive objects were thrown at the consulate's building and that one of them exploded and broke the windows.

The representatives of the Mexican diplomatic headquarters in New York reported the incident to New York's police, who immediately started to cordon off the scene and search for evidence.

The SRE stressed that the conculate office will remain close until police officers decide that it is safe to resume work.
