More than 1,000 villagers collectively dug lotus roots by hand in pond mud in Jingtang village, Huadu in northern Guangzhou on December 16.

It is a local custom to start digging out lotus roots about seven days before the Dongzhi Festival (Winter Solstice) in Chinese Lunar Calendar.

Whoever can own what he or she digs out in the pond.

This famous and nutritious local produce is of premium quality, and used to be presented to emperors in ancient time in China.
