City Gossip: Foreign Looking Swindler Haunts Subway Stations
Recently, numerous posts on a foreign looking swindler have appeared on several major online Chinese forums. All victims have been deceived in the same way after meeting a foreign looking male who called himself Brandon.
English-speaking Brandon borrowed money from his targets, usually local Chinese, using his poor Chinese, under the pretense of needing to travel to Shenzhen. He claimed that he only had 75 yuan and needed to get to Shenzhen before 7:30 am because of an emergency. He usually asked for 1 - 200 yuan and sometimes left a fake name card to gain the trust of his victims.
Some netizens believe that his foreign look gives him an advantage in attempting to swindle money from people. However, his real identity and nationality remain a mystery.
Fortunately, I haven’t encountered this swindler myself, but one of my colleagues who takes the metro everyday told me that he had met him. However, my vigilant colleague refused to lend any money. He told me that after his refusal, so-called Brandon suddenly fell to the ground looking desperate, which almost caused my colleague to change his mind.
Here are some photos of the con man which have been posted on the internet. If you encounter this guy, be careful!
